How can we

Frequently asked

The questions our small inbox sees most often.

Does the app work without an internet connection?

Yes — and it's designed primarily for that situation. After your first launch (a one-time download of around 5 MB), the entire guide works without any network. If you want offline maps for the medina and Greater Marrakech, you can download them separately under Settings → Offline Maps; that pack is around 200 MB.

Why isn't my city / region available?

Marrakech Compass is, deliberately, only about Marrakech. We'd rather make a single excellent guide to one city than a mediocre guide to a hundred. There are no current plans to expand to other destinations under the same brand.

How fresh is the editorial content?

Every place is reviewed at least once per quarter by a member of our editorial team. Each entry shows a freshness badge — green if reviewed in the last 90 days, yellow up to 180, grey beyond. We mark places that have closed or moved as such, instead of removing them silently.

I downloaded the offline pack but the map shows blank tiles.

Make sure you're inside the Greater Marrakech region the pack covers — it's optimised for the urban area plus a buffer of about 15 km. If you're inside that region and still seeing blanks, go to Settings → Offline Maps → Re-verify; this will compare your local cache to the manifest and re-download any missing tiles. If that fails, write to us with the diagnostic ID from Settings → About.

Can I use the app in Arabic with RTL layout?

Yes. Switch your language under Settings → Language to العربية and the entire interface flips to right-to-left. The map controls, scroll directions, navigation chevrons and back gestures all mirror correctly. Number formatting also follows your locale.

How do I turn off analytics?

Settings → Privacy → Analytics turns off Firebase Analytics. Settings → Privacy → Crash Reports turns off Crashlytics and Performance Monitoring. Neither is required for the app to work — they exist only to help us improve it.

Is the app free? Will it always be?

Yes, free, and we plan to keep the core guide free. We may, in future, charge a small one-time fee for premium offline content like the desert routes around Agafay or the Atlas day-trip itineraries. The Marrakech medina guide and emergency resources will remain free forever.

How do I delete all my data?

Two paths: Settings → Storage → Clear all app data wipes preferences, favourites, recent searches and offline content. Uninstalling the app deletes everything immediately. Because we don't keep any personally identifiable data on our servers, those two actions cover everything.

Offline mode

Most travellers reach for Marrakech Compass in exactly the moments connectivity fails them — between a riad's wifi range and a souk lane that swallows GPS. The app is engineered for that, but a couple of practices will make it more reliable:

  1. Open the app once on the wifi at your accommodation. The first launch downloads the editorial database (~5 MB).
  2. Under Settings → Offline Maps, download the Greater Marrakech pack (~200 MB) before you head out.
  3. Open any place detail page once while online — its full description and high-resolution image cache.

After that, you can switch to airplane mode for the day and everything will continue to work, including search, itineraries and the map.

Languages & RTL

The app currently ships in seven languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, and Arabic (with full right-to-left layout). All translations are written and reviewed by humans, not produced by machine translation, and are reviewed seasonally by the editorial team.

If you'd like to help us add another language — Portuguese and Japanese are next on the list — please write to us at editorial@marrakechcompass.app. We're a small team, but we can move quickly when there's a contributor we trust.

Reporting a bug

The most useful bug reports include:

  • What you were doing when the issue happened (which screen, which action).
  • What you expected to happen.
  • What actually happened.
  • Your device model and OS version (iPhone 15 Pro, iOS 18.2 — that level of detail).
  • The diagnostic ID from Settings → About → Diagnostic ID. This anonymous identifier lets us correlate your report with crash data without ever tying it to you personally.

Send all that to bugs@marrakechcompass.app and we'll usually reply within 48 hours, often faster.

Suggest a place

Marrakech Compass is, in many ways, an inbox: locals and long-time visitors send us their favourite places, our editorial team visits each one, and the best are added to the guide. If you have a recommendation, we'd love to hear it.

Tell us why you love it. A specific story is worth more than a five-star rating — it tells us whether we'll see what you saw.

Email editorial@marrakechcompass.app with the name, neighbourhood, and what makes it worth the walk.

Emergency mode

If you're in an emergency right now, please use your phone's native emergency dialer, or the numbers below. Marrakech Compass also keeps these numbers offline under Tips → Emergency:

  • Police — 19 (urban) · 177 (royal gendarmerie, rural)
  • Fire / Civil Protection — 15
  • SAMU (medical emergency) — 141
  • Tourist Police, Marrakech — +212 5 24 38 46 01

The app also includes essential phrases in Darija (the Moroccan dialect) for medical and safety situations, available offline from the moment you install. These are bundled with the app — they require no sync, no account, and no network.
